Many clients ask if they should get a .com.au or just a .com domain name. A .com.au domain name is only available to Australian businesses. Those applying for a .com.au domain need to pass certain eligibility rules, which can be found below. These rules are in place to ensure that ONLY Australian businesses can successfully register a .com.au domain name. So the advantage a .com.au has over a .com is that people know that your business is Australian, and they are more likely to buy from you than an overseas site. However, if brand is important to your business, and your preference was for a .com.au domain name and but it is not available, then you would obviously pick the .com domain name.

Eligibility Rules

The applicant must be:

• An Australian registered company; or
• Trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or
• An Australian partnership or sole trader;
• A foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or
• The applicant/owner of an Australian Pending/Registered Trade Mark; or
• An association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
• An Australian commercial statutory body.

The domain name you wish to register must be:

• an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the registrant’s company or trading name, organization or association name or trade mark; or
• be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant.
